Jesus, Jack Daniels And Me

There was Jesus, Jack Daniels and me

We were talking last Saturday night

As usual Jack brought the bottle

And we all wound up quite tight

I said, 'How did it all go so wrong?

How come the world didn't change?

Why wasn't love all we needed?

Why was it so hard to arrange?'

And Jesus said, 'I tried my best, no one listened to me

They just washed their hands, hung me up on tree'

I said, 'I couldn't find that one missing link'

Jack said, 'Let's just have a drink'

Jack never has much to say

Me, I just talk all the time

Jesus just sits there and smiles

Like he might turn Jack into wine

I said 'Show me which way I should turn

Is this some kind of a test?

Why won't somebody tell me

What I should do for the best?'

And Jesus said, 'I tried my best, no one listened to me

They just washed their hands, hung me up on tree'

I said, 'I couldn't find that one missing link'

Jack said, 'Let's just have a drink'

Jack comes from Tennessee

It's written all over his face

Jesus says he's down from heaven

Or some such unlikely place

Where it's peaceful and no one complains

And everyone's finally free

I said, 'Oh, you must be joking

Sounds like paradise to me'

And Jesus said, 'I tried my best, no one listened to me

They just washed their hands, hung me up on tree'

I said, 'I couldn't find that one missing link'

Jack said, 'Let's just have a drink'

It's four in the morning again

Jesus and me, we're alone

The bottle is finally empty

I must've missed Jack going home

Jesus, he turns as he leaves

And says with his eyes full of tears

'Why is it when you feel like talking

Do I find Jack already here?'

And Jesus said, 'I tried my best, no one listened to me

They just washed their hands, hung me up on tree'

I said, 'I couldn't find that one missing link'

Jack said, 'Let's just have a drink'
